Acupuncture & Herbal treatmentfor Infertility & in Vitro Fertilization:Even though Acupuncture and herbs have a long history of use in aiding fertility, they became popular in the United States in the early 1970s, not just for infertility treatment, but also a wide variety of medical conditions. Actually, majority of acupuncture treatments have been for the pain management, and it is just a few years since public started to show interest in traditional Asian medicine as an adjunctive infertility treatment. Most fertility
specialists trace the current popularity of acupuncture treatment to
a German study published in 2002 in the journal Fertility and
Sterility.[1]
The study found that women receiving acupuncture just before and after an assisted-reproductive therapy, such as IVF had higher pregnancy rate than the patients who got assisted-reproductive treatments but who received no acupuncture therapy. Afterward, more research papers and books about acupuncture as an adjunctive infertility therapy have been published, and some doctors started to try it out for their patients. Also, as the life style of modern society has been changed, more men and women delay having their children until their 30s and 40s, and infertility become a rising big issue. These days more women began asking their doctors for referrals to acupuncturists. Although the public interests on this began to rise, the acupuncture and herbal treatment along with IVF treatment is still relatively new even to many acupuncturists because the history of IVF treatment itself is not that long. It’s just a quarter century since the first successful IVF treatment in the USA took place; that was in 1981. Since then IVF has exploded in popularity, with as many as 1% of all births now being conceived in-vitro, with over 115,000 born in the USA to date. At present, the percentage of children born after IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has been up to 4% of all babies born in Demark.[2] In general, acupuncture and natural herbs in infertility treatment procedure such as IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection demonstrate promising results in new studies [1] Article <Acupuncture for fertility: Doctors say, ‘Why not?’ With more patients asking for it, some clinics are offering the ancient technique.> By Elena Conis, Special to the Times.
